What Is the HE300VG Turbo? 6.7L Cummins Applications & Specs
The HE300VG is a Holset variable-geometry turbocharger fitted to the 6.7L Cummins. If you own a newer Ram diesel and someone mentions your "VGT," this is the turbo they're talking about.
Quick answer: The HE300VG is the factory variable-geometry turbo on 2013–2018 6.7L Cummins engines (Ram 2500/3500). It uses movable turbine vanes and an electronic actuator to control boost and provide exhaust braking, replacing the HE351VE used on 2007.5–2012 trucks.
Applications
The HE300VG is the factory VGT on 2013–2018 6.7L Cummins engines in Ram 2500/3500 trucks. The earlier 2007.5–2012 trucks ran the HE351VE, a closely related VGT. (True North Turbos builds an HE300VG-style drop-in that covers the full 2007.5–2018 range.)
How the variable geometry works
Rather than a wastegate, the HE300VG uses a ring of pivoting vanes in the turbine housing. An electronic actuator changes the vane angle: closing them speeds exhaust gas across the turbine for quick spool and low-end response (and enables exhaust braking), opening them to flow more air up top. That variable behaviour is why the truck feels responsive at low rpm yet keeps breathing at higher rpm.
Strengths
- Fast spool and strong low-end torque for towing.
- Integrated exhaust brake.
- Good drivability across the rev range.
Known weak points
- Vane sticking from carbon/soot build-up.
- Actuator wear and calibration faults.
Both are covered in depth in HE300VG Actuator & VGT Problems.
How to identify it
The HE300VG is on the passenger side of the 6.7L Cummins with the electronic actuator mounted to the turbo. If you're unsure whether you have an HE300VG or the earlier HE351VE, the comparison guide breaks down the differences by year.
Frequently asked questions
Is the HE300VG the same as the HE351VE?
No. The HE351VE came on 2007.5–2012 6.7L trucks; the HE300VG replaced it for 2013–2018. They're both VGTs but differ in design and calibration.
What does VGT mean?
Variable Geometry Turbocharger — a turbo whose turbine vanes move to control exhaust flow, boost, and exhaust braking, instead of using a wastegate.
Can the HE300VG be upgraded?
Yes — with a billet compressor wheel/rebuild or a drop-in replacement for more airflow and power.
