S400 Replacement Turbo Cross-Reference: S467 to S488

If you are replacing an S400-frame turbocharger, this page tells you which True North Turbos unit drops into its place. Every TNT4R turbo is built on the 400 frame, which means the mounting hardware you already have — manifold, downpipe flange, clamp, compressor discharge, and oil drain — carries straight over.

True North Turbos are designed, machined, assembled, and balanced in Canada by Black Sheep Industries. They are not rebadged imports, and they are not BorgWarner products. They are purpose-built replacements engineered to the same frame standard.

What "Direct Replacement" Actually Means

Because a TNT4R is built on the same 400 frame, the interfaces around it are unchanged. In practice:

  • Turbine inlet. T4 or T6, matching your existing manifold. No manifold change if you stay on the same flange.
  • Turbine discharge. 5.75" (146mm) marmon on T6, 4.62" (117mm) half marmon on T4 — the same flanges and clamps you are already running.
  • Compressor discharge. V-band sized to your charge pipe, unchanged.
  • Oil drain. Large-frame 50.8mm (2.00") bolt centre with a 12AN port, unchanged.
  • Oil feed. Same feed arrangement; confirm your restrictor matches the bearing type you are moving to.

What Is Not Identical

Being honest about this matters more than a marketing claim would.

  • Wheel design differs. TNT compressor and turbine wheels are our own designs, not copies. The 12-blade billet compressor on the TNT485 and TNT492 and the 96x88 and 103x92 turbine options were developed specifically to reduce restrictions we found in standard offerings. Expect the airflow character to differ somewhat from the unit you are replacing, generally in your favour.
  • A/R options may differ. Check the housing options against what you are running — see the A/R guide.
  • Built to order. Most TNT4R turbos are assembled to your spec rather than pulled from a shelf, so lead time applies.
  • Tuning. Any turbo change on a tuned truck warrants a look at boost control and fuelling.

Choosing If You Are Not Replacing Like for Like

If you are stepping up rather than swapping the same size, the sizing guide walks through the trade between airflow and spool:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a True North turbo a direct replacement for an S400?

Yes. TNT4R turbochargers are built on the 400 frame, so the manifold, downpipe flange, clamp, compressor discharge, and oil drain from an existing S400-frame installation all carry over. Match the compressor size and turbine flange and it bolts into the same place.

Which True North turbo replaces an S476?

The TNT476, available in both T4 and T6 flange configurations with a 76mm compressor. It covers S475 and S476 applications and supports roughly 950 to 1,050 wheel horsepower.

Which True North turbo replaces an S488?

The TNT488, in T4 or T6, with an 88mm compressor and a choice of 96x88 or 103x92 turbine wheels. It supports roughly 1,200 to 1,300 wheel horsepower.

Do I need new flanges or a new drain to switch?

No, provided you stay on the same turbine flange. The 400 frame uses the same 5.75" marmon discharge on T6, 4.62" half marmon on T4, and a 50.8mm bolt centre 12AN oil drain. If you are moving between T4 and T6 you will need the matching downpipe flange and clamp.

Are True North turbos made by BorgWarner?

No. True North Turbos are designed, machined, assembled, and balanced in Canada by Black Sheep Industries. They are independent products built to the same frame standard, not rebadged or licensed units.

Will a TNT turbo perform the same as the unit it replaces?

Not identically. Compressor and turbine wheels are our own designs, developed to reduce restrictions found in standard offerings. Fitment is equivalent; airflow character will differ, generally with more capability at the same frame size.
